In a 21 October 1997 telephone interview with the Research Directorate, the director of the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) in Madrid and the Cuban Centre (Centro Cubano), Spain's largest Cuban exile organization, stated that he was unaware of any deportations of Cuban taking place during his 19 year tenure as director of the centre. He also stated that Cubans fiving and working clandestinely in Spain are, to his knowledge, fined rather than deported if identified to the authorities. The Research Directorate is unable to corroborate this information at the present time.
The attached 17 October 1996 Miami Herald report states that a Cuban artist who has lived in Barcelona, Spain, for five years was arrested and served with a deportation order after his bid for political asylum was denied. The Research Directorate is unable to ascertain whether or not the deportation order was carried out.
This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of additional sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
