In response to today's announcement by the Nepali police of the arrest of another suspected killer of Nepali journalist, Uma Singh, ARTICLE 19 executive director, Dr Agnes Callamard said:

"We welcome today's announcement of the arrest of a suspected murderer of the Nepali radio journalist, Uma Singh, who was attacked in her home in 2009 and brutally stabbed to death by 12 men.

"Uma was a respected investigative journalist working hard in a media sector dominated by men. Her stark criticism of local political party leaders was courageous in a country where violent retribution for criticism is common.

"Uma was the first woman journalist killed in Nepal. Local authorities initially claimed her death was the result of a land ownership argument, although the media community in Nepal believe the real motivation was to shut her up and dissuade others from criticising powerful people.

"ARTICLE 19 raised Uma's case at the UN in 2010 through Nepal's Universal Periodic Review, calling on the government to investigate the case at the national level and bring all perpetrators and their instigators to justice. This arrest by a special police force is a step in the right direction.
