According to a researcher at Africa Watch in New York, the Robert's Field Airport (outside Monrovia) is closed and under the control of the Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPLF) (4 Feb. 1992). The Spriggs Paine Airport (in Monrovia) is open and under the control of the Economic Commission of Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) forces which are backing the Sawyers interim government (Ibid.). According to Africa Research Bulletin, ECOMOG is part of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) ceasefire monitoring group (Sept. 1991, 10275).

A representative of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in New York stated that the interim government of Amos Sawyers is controlling the Monrovia airport with the assistance of the ECOMOG armed forces (4 Feb. 1992).
