No reports on the treatment of ethnic Koreans by the authorities and the local population could be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate. However, the following information may be of interest.

A 28 May 2001 Korean Herald report states that 20,000 ethnic Koreans were residents of Kyrgyzstan and that a further 700 Koreans were temporary residents. The report also states that the education and Human Resources Development Ministry of Kyrgyzstan was opening a "Korea Education Center" in the capital city of Bishkek. The report quotes officials of the ministry as saying that the centre will provide "Korean Language and Culture Classes for both Korean residents and foreigners."

A 15 January 2001 Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty report states that 200 members of the 20,000 strong Korean community in Kyrgyzstan held a congress in Bishkek on 12 January 2001 and re-elected Roman Shin as the chairman of their organization.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the Research Directorate within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum. Please find below the list of sources consulted in researching this Information Request.
