The following information was provided during a 13 August 1997 telephone interview with a representative of the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto.

The source stated that the Permesso Di Soggiorno is issued by local police stations only to foreigners who hold a valid entry visa from an Italian representation abroad.

The permit varies in duration according to each case but cannot exceed one year. Renewal of the document is dependent upon approval by the local police stations and each case. A police station can refuse to renew the Permesso Di Soggiorno.

This Response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This Response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
