Two of the attached documents provide some information on the situation of persons in Brazil who have the Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) or have tested HIV-positive, with a few references to the particular case of homosexuals.

One of the attached documents, an article written by a reporter in Brazil, explains the work and problems faced by different organizations that try to care for AIDS patients and prevent the spread of the disease (Latinamerica Press 21 Dec. 1989, 5). The other report, published by Human Rights Internet in 1990, describes problems faced by persons who suffer from AIDS, with specific examples for Brazil. Both reports, however, cover the situation of persons with AIDS, not necessarily that of homosexuals with AIDS. As indicated in the Latinamerica Press article, the majority of people affected by AIDS in Brazil are homosexuals, although the number of heterosexual cases is increasing and intravenous drug users constitute nearly 12 per cent of the total.

Also attached, please find a brief report published in late 1992 in Libération. According to the article, a gay group in Bahia alleges that 1,200 homosexuals have been killed in Brazil since 1980, 113 of whom were reportedly killed in the city of Salvador de Bahia (Liberation 13 Dec. 1992).
