According to an official of the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Ottawa, Bulgaria today recognizes and accepts the right of its citizens to obtain the nationality of other countries without losing Bulgarian nationality (5 Jan. 1994). Bulgaria therefore recognizes and accepts multiple nationality with Russia (ibid.). Note however, that Russia does not recognize multiple nationality with Bulgaria (Response to Information Request RUS15948.E 6 Jan. 1994). For further information on Bulgarians wishing to acquire the nationality of other countries, please refer to the attached document on nationality extracted from the Bulgarian constitution.

This response was prepared after researching publicly accessible information currently available to the DIRB within time constraints. This response is not, and does not purport to be, conclusive as to the merit of any particular claim to refugee status or asylum.
