The 9 March 2001 Notices of the US Federal Register indicates that nationals of El Salvador are granted Temporary Protection Status (TPS) from 9 March 2001 to 9 September 2002 (United States Office of the Federal Register 9 March 2001, 14214). TPS is available to all nationals of El Salvador who have been "continually physically present" in the US since 9 March 2001 and who have "continuously resided" in the US since 13 February 2001 (ibid.) either legally or illegally (FAIR Legislative Action Center n.d.). Please find a copy of the 9 March 2001 Notices pages attached.
