  1. Poorly-distributed rain during the March-May rainfall season has led to large moisture deficits in southeastern Tigray and eastern Amhara regions of Ethiopia.

  2. A slow onset to seasonal rainfall and consistent limited rain over the past several weeks has maintained moisture deficits and caused abnormal dryness over the Gulf of Guinea countries.

Highlights in March and April

• In March and April, deportations of sub-Saharan migrants and refugees by Algerian authorities increased at the border with Mali and Niger. According to the Algerian Minister of the Interior and local authorities Nourredine Bedaoui, 27,000 Sub-Saharans have been expelled from Algeria since 2015.

• According to IOM, the number of migrants in transit in Segedine and coming out of Niger increased significantly in March and April, with 4,284 people identified in March and 4,395 in April, compared to 851 in February.

Monrovia, 31 May 2018: The National Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Program at the Ministry of Health (MoH) with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) convened a one day workshop in Monrovia to validate Liberia’s National IPC guidelines. Infection prevention and control is an approach designed to prevent harm caused by infection to patients and health workers.
