Tobinco Group, a Ghanaian-owned private sector Group of Companies, took a step with refugees during the world refugee day commemoration in Ampain this year as the Group donated items worth over 100,000 cedis to support refugees at the Ampain Refugee Camp in the Western Region.

Items donated included used clothing and toiletries for the refugee community. The Group also presented assorted drugs to the Ghana Health Service in the Camp.

According to the Executive Director of the Samuel Amoo Tobbin Foundation, Ms. Harriet N. Asante, the initiative which forms part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts was also in support of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of leaving no one behind. “We recognize the peculiar challenge of people forced to flee and will like to ensure that they are not left behind and that’s why we are taking a step with refugees” she said.

A major challenge at the Camp clinic is the lack of medication at the facility. Although most refugees are registered on health insurance, the unavailability of medications at the facility makes it a challenge as refugees sometimes have to go around town with prescriptions for drugs.

UNHCR’s Global Compact on Refugees encourages a multi-stakeholder and partnership approach which includes the Private Sector in supporting existing efforts and providing solutions in support of persons forced to flee.

A Senior Physician Assistant at the Camp Clinic, Ms. Patricia Opomea who received the medications on behalf of the facility thanked the Tobinco Group for the timely intervention. She assured the health staff will continue to deliver quality service to refugees and host community members who use the facility.

Tobinco Group also had a party for about 500 children in the camp at the World Refugee Day commemoration in Ampain.
