A note on the refugee population from Burundi
The above total reflects the refugee population covered by the Burundi Regional Refugee Response Plan and includes Burundian refugees who fled since April 2015, as well as some 37,000 Burundian refugees who sought asylum in the region prior to April 2015. In addition to the population above, there are some 13,800 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya,7,800 in Mozambique, 8,300 in Malawi, 9,200 in South Africa and 6,000 in Zambia who are assisted within the respective country-level programmes. A further 42,200 Burundian refugees, who have lived for decades in Tanzania, no longer receive assistance and are not included in these figures.

As of 18 June 2019, merely 27.9 million USD was received out of the total requirements of 106 million USD for the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) for Burundi which includes the humanitarian needs of Burundian returnees. Out of the 31.4 million USD specifically required to support sustainable return and reintegration; less than 600,000 USD has been received thus far.

There were 119,890 IDPs in Burundi as of April 2019 according to IOM’s Data Tracking Matrix, 76 per cent of the factors of displacement are linked to natural disasters, 24 per cent are linked to the socio political situation.

In Uganda, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) jointly released the revised 2019-2020 Uganda Refugee Response Plan (RRP). The revision is a result of an exercise of planning figures, targets and budgets with a reduced refugee population as of year-end 2018 which started last February.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is pleased to announce the first ever Global Refugee Forum, which will take place on 17 and 18 December 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland. The event, which is being held at Ministerial level, will be co-hosted with Switzerland and co-convened by Turkey, Germany, Ethiopia and Costa Rica.

New Global Trends report on the state of the world’s refugees shows displacement continues to rise. In 2018, the world reached yet another tragic milestone. For the first time in recorded history the number of displaced people around the world eclipsed 70 million. By the end of the year, 70.8 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, or generalized violence.

8,253 Burundian refugees have been assisted to voluntarily return so far in 2019, with some 1,801 assisted in March and 2,975 assisted in April.

Global Trends in Forced Displacement Released Wednesday 19 June 2019
UNHCR’s annual Global Trends Report shows that nearly 70.8 million people were displaced at the end of 2018. Some 13.6 people were newly displaced during the course of the year.

“We need continued solidarity to meet the basic needs and protection for the majority of Burundian refugees who are not yet ready to go home and live in overcrowded camps with limited opportunities to support themselves and their families,” said Catherine Wiesner, UNHCR’s Regional Refugee Coordinator for the Burundi Situation. The Burundi refugee response and return operation are running on a very limited budget. UNHCR and partner agencies have through the Burundi Regional Response Plan for 2019-2020, appealed for US$ 296 million this year. Only 10 per cent of the financial requirements have been received.
UNHCR to launch first Global Refugee Forum
With tens of millions of people affected by war, conflict and persecution, the Global Refugee Forum will be an opportunity for countries to take stock of today’s situation and to strengthen the international response. It follows the new Global Compact on Refugees that was agreed last December by the UN General Assembly, and is part of its implementation.
