The National Office for Refugees (ONR) and the National Commission for Refugees (CONARE)

The National Office for Refugees (ONR for its acronym in Spanish) is the office which is in charge of receiving asylum applications. This is who you should turn too to apply for asylum. The National Commission for Refugees (CONARE for its acronym in Spanish) is the eligibility commission which will then review and make decisions concerning your asylum application.

UNHCR Dominican Republic

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a humanitarian agency created by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 1950. UNHCR provides technical support and advice to CONARE in the refugee status recognition procedure. It also works with other government agencies, NGOs and civil society in the promotion and protection of refugee rights, especially those with specific needs.

Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Social (IDDI)

IDDI is UNHCR’s implementing partner for humanitarian assistance. The humanitarian assistance program entails emergency support for asylum seekers and refugees by providing material assistance, specifically housing, food and health, as well as psychological support and legal assistance. The approval of material assistance is subjected to both socio-economic and risk evaluation, which are conducted at IDDI offices.
