Right now refugee girls are missing out on school.
“I want to be a doctor”, says Meher, an orphan living with her siblings in a refugee camp in Bangladesh. But she is one of many refugee girls missing out on an education.
Please help change this today.
When places are limited boys are often the ones who get them, while the responsibility of looking after siblings and domestic chores falls to girls. Also, schools for refugees are often not adapted for girls with no private toilets and a lack of female teachers.
UNHCR is working hard to make more spaces for girls, adapt schools to their needs and support refugee families to keep their girls in school. In Bangladesh alone 168 classrooms have been constructed since the influx of Rohingya refugees began last August.
We won’t rest until all girls like Meher are in school but we desperately need funds to do this.
If we continue to neglect refugee girls’ education, the consequences will be felt for generations. It is time to make them a priority.
