OVERVIEW

In 2016 and 2017 Brazil has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of asylum applications submitted by Venezuelan nationals. By November 2017, according the official statistics, there were 20,137 Venezuelan asylum seekers in Brazil. Considering the evolving situation in Venezuela, the number of persons fleeing the deteriorating situation in Venezuela is likely to keep rising.

Highlights

• As of the 18th of June, the UNICEF Principal Adviser on Health Epidemic assumed the role of the UN coordinator for the Ebola response in Mbandaka for 3 weeks.

• As of the 20th of June, a total 38 confirmed and 14 probable cases were reported in the three affected health zones of Wangata (Mbandaka), Bikoro and Itipo of the Equateur province.

Around 400,000 people have been newly displaced on both sides of the regional borders of Gedeo (SNNP region) and Guji (Oromia region) zones since 1 June (ECHO 19/06/2018). In total, some 700,000 people have been displaced since a new wave of violence between the Gedeo and Guji communities started on 13 April. Insecurity continues to prevent IDPs from returning to their areas of origin (OCHA 14/06/2018; OCHA 22/05/2018; UNICEF 10/05/2018). IDPs are staying in shelters in public buildings and spontaneous IDP sites.

The upcoming meetings of the EU in Brussels on asylum and migration come three years after the Mediterranean crisis, when more than a million desperate people crossed the sea to Europe. Despite today’s dramatically lower arrival rates, the shockwaves of that event still reverberate - at the political level, and in the tendency towards restrictive, unilateral approaches that some European countries have pursued in dealing with refugees and migrants since then. The moment has come to change things for the better.

In Hodeida, Yemen, the ongoing fighting has forced hundreds of families to flee their homes to safe areas, with no hope of return for the moment. Arriving with very little, people are in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medical attention.

Yesterday (June 21 2018), the International Committee of the Red Cross started distributing food to 3,000 displaced people from Al-Mandhar village. There is very little other assistance there for people.

Opération « Ramadan à la maison» à Kaga-Bandoro
Du 12 au 14 juin 2018, l’opération dénommée « Ramadan à la maison » s’est poursuivie à Kaga-Bandoro toujours avec le concours du HCR, OIM, et PARET et a permis d’assister le retour de 148 ménages de 368 personnes déplacées internes du site Mbella vers la ville de Kaga-Bandoro. Chaque ménage a reçu 50,000FCFA du PARET et des kits NFI de l’OIM constitués de kits cuisine, nattes, couvertures, bâches, bassines et lampes.

Civilian casualties have continued to rise in eastern Ukraine, as hostilities have intensified along the ‘contact line’. In May 2018, OHCHR recorded 61 civilian casualties (12 killed and 49 injured), which is the highest so far in 2018. The humanitarian situation in the Chyhari settlement (Donetska oblast) remains of concern due to intense fighting which broke out on 27 May. Eleven houses were reportedly destroyed and 50 damaged in the settlement, which is approximately 800 metres from the ‘contact line’.

El director Territorial Magdalena de la Unidad para las Victimas, Carlos Ortiz Ruiz, lideró esta semana la entrega de 300 cartas de indemnización.

150 de esas cartas se entregaron en el Centro Regional de Atención a Víctimas de la ciudad de Santa Marta y las otras 150 en el municipio de Ciénaga.

• The majority of the new arrivals cited lack of food as their reason for displacement (75%) while others cited rejoining their family (25%).

• The majority of new arrivals came from Ethiopia (57%) while the remaining came from Belet xaawo(13%), Xudur (13%) and Garbaharey district (14%).

June 20, 2018 – On July 9, 2018, the UN Security Council will hold its Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict (CAC), under the presidency of Sweden, current chair of the Security Council Working Group on CAC. At the debate, the Secretary-General (SG) will present his annual report on CAC, pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2225 (2015), covering January 1 to December 31, 2017. Sweden will take the opportunity of the debate to highlight protection of children’s rights and prevention of future violations, and plans to introduce a resolution for adoption.
