Office: The Representation is in Ashgabat, and was opened in 1995.

Programmes in Ashgabat (the capital), Lebap, Akhal, and Dashoguz provinces.

Persons of Concern[1]: 4,336

Refugees: 23

  • Afghanistan: 14
  • Azerbaijan: 8
  • Russian Federation: 1

Stateless persons: 4,313 (reported by UNHCR’s non-governmental partner organizations implementing projects on prevention and reduction of statelessness in Turkmenistan)

Voluntary repatriation: Since its establishment the Office in Turkmenistan organised and implemented voluntary repatriation of 6,008 refugees to their countries of origin, mostly to Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Resettlement: The Office in Turkmenistan organised resettlement of 1,051 refugees.

Projects and partners:

  • Legal and social assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers: Public Organization "Keik Okara"
  • Prevention and reduction of statelessness:  Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Migration Service, Ministry of Interior, Parliament, local authorities, Public Organization “Keik Okara” and National Red Crescent Society;
  • Capacity building of government institution:Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Migration Service, State Border Guards Service, National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights. 
  • SDGs: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNCT, UN Agencies
