Information session with journalists in Tajikistan

On February 21, 2012 UNHCR Tajikistan conducted an awareness session with journalists of local and international mass media.

"Mass media is the biggest partner of UNHCR all over the world and the role of mass media is pivotal in correct reflection of the information. You are the first who provides information to the local and international communities, based on which decisions which change the life of many are being taken. That is why UNHCR strives to work with mass media directly in order to provide accurate and responsible information" - opened the session Mr. Jose Euceda, UNHCR Representative in Tajikistan.

More than 10 mass media representatives took part in the session, devoted mainly to raising awareness on UNHCR operations in the world and Tajikistan in particular. Being interested in topics such as legal regulations for refugees, accession to the statelessness conventions, experience of other Central Asian countries, journalists took an active part in the session.

"The most important of this awareness session is that we had an opportunity to talk directly with a refugee, Head of the Afghan Association "Ariana" who was invited to the session. It gave us an opportunity to see the issues of refugees from the "first hands", from refugees themselves" - underlined one of the journalists, who took part in the session.

UNHCR implementing partners also delivered presentations for the media covering the areas of their help to refugees. The Director of the NGO "Refugee Children and Vulnerable Citizens (RCVC)" is working with UNHCR for more than 15 years stated that starting from 1996 more than 4, 500 refugees were assisted with the help of the NGO. Another Implementing partner "Rights and Prosperity" is a new partner, but already accomplished successfully many projects aimed at providing legal support to Persons of Concern to UNHCR.

UNHCR expresses gratitude to all media representatives who attended the event.
