The EU hosts a fraction of the world’s forcibly displaced. Most - 85% - are in the world’s poorest nations. An EU asylum system that both protects refugees + supports countries hosting them, with solidarity at its centre is possible. Read more here

In 1816, in the raft of the Medusa, 15 persons survived, in some of the daily tragedies of the Central Med, no1 survives & more will die if we do not maintain a credible -at-sea capacity on both sides of mare nostrum

A bit of context No. of people arriving by boat to Europe across Mediterranean in 2018 is around 44,000 SIX times less than same period in 2016 & far from peak in 2015 Real issue is for 5th year in a row, more than 1,000 have died. Saving lives at sea has to be top priority

▪️For every 21 refugees in need of resettlement only one departed to a resettlement country in 2017. ▪️Since 2016 refugee resettlement opportunities available to UNHCR have dropped by nearly 50%.

It is not enough to have political agreements between States when people continue to drown in the Mediterranean. Rescue at sea, disembarkation and safe pathways must all be urgently improved so that lives can be saved.

EU countries need to come together and ‘chart a new way forward’ to save lives. Asylum in the EU needs to be upheld, with a focus on responsibility sharing, not shifting. Read latest from UNHCR and IOM ahead of today’s here

Those shouting about a “refugee emergency” in Europe or America should visit African communities giving refuge to millions with small resources. Energies would be better spent helping people address problems here while sharing some of the refugee burden born by poor countries.

Predictable rescue-at-sea among the Mediterranean countries is a a test for our values. What legacy do we want to leave behind? Less declarations & more concrete acts of solidarity/responsibility are needed.
