Every time we hear someone dehumanize a human w/ animal rhetoric we are hearing a racist idea. The history of racist ideas is the history of power manufacturing races, and manufacturing certain races into animals, and manufacturing fears that cage minds and justify caged bodies.

"a year ago we would have been out on the streets, were the gov't stealing the children of asylum-seekers and refugees and sending them halfway across the country or stacking them up like lumber in detention facilities. I worry, we are horrified but numb."

As a neuroscientist studying early life adversity, I cannot - and will not - be silent on this issue. Childhood separation increases vulnerability to mental + physical illness, and changes the course of a life. It is immoral. Inhumane. Unconscionable.
