Flying tonight from Libya to Niger with 122 refugees freed from detention centers in Tripoli. Hopefully they will be resettled to third countries soon. This programme is crucial: it provides safe, orderly alternatives to people smuggling and exploitation.

Many rich countries are closing their doors to refugees. Niger 🇳🇪 shares with them its very few resources. Humbled to spend with the people and leaders of this generous African nation.

In the past few days, we have witnessed different examples of Spanish solidarity with refugees. Thank you for highlighting it.

A refugee child evacuated from Libya to Niger made this drawing. He could have been among the 220 people who drowned in the Mediterranean today. Let’s give more children safe pathways out of despair.

EU member states will soon debate migration and refugees. Read the statement which I issued ahead of these important discussions.

Discussion à Bamako avec le Président Keïta sur la mise en place des conditions pour le retour des réfugiés maliens des pays voisins. La sécurité est une priorité, conjointement avec le dialogue, le respect des droits, l’accès humanitaire et le développement.

Those shouting about a “refugee emergency” in Europe or America should visit African communities giving refuge to millions with small resources. Energies would be better spent helping people address problems here while sharing some of the refugee burden born by poor countries.

As solutions for refugees shrink worldwide, resettling the most vulnerable ones from fragile situations to stable countries saves lives: we need more (not less!) resettlement places and more states to accept resettled refugees.

As current chair of the organizations sponsoring I briefed its board urging faster action towards ending AIDS as a threat by 2030. I also highlighted that victims of humanitarian crises are especially vulnerable to HIV.

Millions of refugees and displaced will benefit from Sweden’s latest contribution to UNHCR: 400 million $ over 4 years. Flexible funds to be used where they are most needed including in underfunded crises. This is generous and exemplary donorship. Thank you 🇸🇪!

Happy to participate in the opening of this year’s consultations with NGOs. The theme is “putting people first”. At a time when even refugees and displaced are politicized and dehumanized, I cannot think of a better focus.

To ensure that people rescued at sea are disembarked safely and that subsequent procedures are carried out quickly but fairly, UNHCR and IOM have proposed several ideas to the EU. We stand ready to help.

We have spoken for years of linking humanitarian and development aid. Now it is happening, thanks to the and other development partners. In Bangladesh - and many more countries - the potential positive impact can be huge.
