    Tragic loss of lives today off the coast of Libya - concerted efforts needed to avoid further tragedies at sea

    Saddened by the loss of 100 lives today off the coast of Libya in Tajoura - 30 women and 70 men died after swimming for one hour before they were rescued. UNHCR teams supported the 16 survivors upon disembarkation with humanitarian and medical assistance

    In Libya, at the start of a trip along the routes of refugees+migrants. Some crossed the sea. Some died. Some are trapped. UNHCR, & partners are here. We believe the situation can be managed, given the right resources, approaches & international support.

    As of 2 May, 5,109 persons were disembarked in Libya. This week, 213 refugees and migrants were disembarked at the Al Khums Port (94 individuals) and the Tripoli Naval Base (119 individuals). With we provided humanitarian & medical assistance on site.
