As new minister heads to Sicily, vowing to “end the good times for clandestine [migrants]” & calling NGOs “deputy traffickers”, sniper fire kills one, injures 2 African labourers in Calabria. Here’s what I told about racism in Italy:

Salvini orders asylum committees to restrict access to humanitarian permits. Absent legal channels for the migrant workers Italy actually needs, humanitarian permits have been one of few means to acquire temporary papers (& for torture survivors to stay)

In the period 1 June-5 July, 1 in 12 migrants who attempted the sea crossing in the Central Med died. Rescue ships save lives, they are NOT a pull factor: PUSH factors (in particular the conditions experienced by in Libya) are far more significant than any pull factor.

Excellent piece by which explains why Salvini, in a country where criminal syndicates control >10% of GDP & swathes of territory, only mentions organised crime in connection with the asylum seeker reception system

    1) Create segregated neighhbourhoods; 2) blame inhabitants for not "assimilating"; 3) roll out blatantly discriminatory policies; 4) justify them by claiming Danes think in terms of "society", not individuals- a mono-ethnic/racial society, that is

Only concrete points in summit statement were to “continue supporting Libyan coast guard” (to take people back to hellish detention centres) & warning to NGOs “not to obstruct” CG operations. No NGOs off now - only result is hundreds of deaths over last few days

Is Europe really divided on migration? And can migration break the European project, regardless of the numbers arriving? My take

Step 1 in ending EU rescue at sea: Italy barring all ships carrying migrants from its ports (except own CG) & telling all vessels to call phantom Tripoli rescue centre. Step 2 (non-EU country to take them in) still wild dream. Result: survivors stranded

Cover of Italian weekly , quoting Vittorini WWII novel & asking readers whose side they are on - cynicism, indifference, exploiting fear to win votes (Salvini) or moral revolt, empathy and defence of the weakest (union leader @abou_CISPM_USB). Grazie,

Spain's generous offer shld not shift attention from additional suffering for those on to reach Valencia - & fact that precious assets are now far from rescue zone. 41 shipwreck survivors also currently blocked on US navy vessel after rescue by

Very difficult situation. Shipwreck occured in the Med. 41 survivors 12 corpses recovered. Survivors are clearly in need of immediate assistance and need to be brought to a close and safe port.

In first speech to Italian parliament, Salvini rails ag. NGOs saving lives in Med & Soros, pledges to present official report on NGO funding. Unlike his party's, rescue NGOs' funding sources are public & transparent (& do not incl. "Soros money")

Italian & German interior ministers to present "joint proposal on border protection" - which incoming Austrian Presidency will embrace. Coupled with boost in border management funding, EU internal disagreements on asylum leading to even greater drive to keep migrants out

To teach "deputy trafficker" NGOs a lesson, the Italian government takes coast guard vessel & navy ship away from more urgent operations for 8 days - if it weren't tragic for people on board & for NGO's capacity to save lives at sea, this would be farcical

Spain’s offer is laudable, but the cannot reach Valencia unaided. If no urgent assistance is forthcoming (eg from the Spanish navy), including the urgent evacuation of the sick & vulnerable, the situation on board will become untenable
