Nyathijien dreams of becoming a professional athlete.

She fled the violence that engulfed her country South Sudan.

Nyathijien Makuey’s dream is to become a professional athlete. She won the 5000m race during a mini-Olympic competition organized by UNHCR and partners in Jewi camp, Gambella, Ethiopia.

Two years ago, aged 12 years, Nyathijien fled the violence that engulfed her country South Sudan. She was lucky to escape and recalls that many people, including children, lost their lives in the carnage.

“This is not the first time for me to win a competition. I have won sports competitions in my school in South Sudan and received prizes,” says Nyathijien. The participation of refugees at Rio Olympics has deepened her desire to become a world star and advocate for peace. “I will continue to work hard to one day become an Olympian,” she adds.

Nyathijien’s 19-year-old brother, Chiok, won the 5000m male race. “I wake up every morning and do some running exercises before going to school, he says. “My sister started joining me and we made it a routine. Sports is about regular practice.”
