UNHCR Representative in Ukraine, Mr. Pablo Mateu
Pablo Mateu worked for over 25 years with UNHCR, having served in nine countries and the agency’s Headquarters in Geneva.
His field experience includes working in refugee camps in Algeria, Mauritania, and Mexico; facilitating the return of refugees to their home countries (‘returnees’) in Afghanistan, Central America, and Mozambique; and reintegrating persons displaced in their own countries (‘Internally Displaced Persons’) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He served as UNHCR Representative in Algiers (2008-2009).
At UNHCR’s headquarters, his experience centred on linking humanitarian assistance with development; inter-agency cooperation; livelihoods; and durable solutions.
Before coming to Ukraine, Pablo Mateu worked on independent oversight, assessing the management quality of UNHCR operations around the world. Prior to joining UNHCR, he worked as a consultant for ILO and founded a national NGO in his native country El Salvador, specialising in microfinance and local development.
Pablo Mateu joined UNHCR Ukraine in 2016.
