The int’l community failed to prevent this ongoing genocide, failed to rescue the girls kept in slavery, and now they are failing to bring justice for Yazidis. The fact that in Canada today there are retuned ISIS fighters that have not been charged is absolutely unconscionable.

In 2014, the Yazidi genocide began. ISIS killed men en masse and women were sold into sexual slavery. The specific interpretation of the Hadith meant that Yazidis, unlike other religious groups, were allowed to be kept as slaves because they are considered pagans.

On World Refugee Day I’m thinking about Nadia Murad. Nadia is my personal hero. Over the last few years I have had the privilege to work with Yazidis like her and have been able to become intimately aware of the situation facing the Yazidi people.
