    More on the little girl who was stabbed to death at her birthday party in Boise: Her name was Ruya Kadir and she had just turned 3. She and her mom were Ethiopian refugees and she was her mother's "source of strength." She loved pink and Disney princesses

    So before we ask someone to seek asylum in "the right way," before we raise our physical and legal walls, before rushing to conclusions about terrorism or "cultural change" - consider that all were JUST like you and I, until one day something changed.

    I cannot imagine that any of us who are currently privileged enough to live in safety would make a different choice if confronted with the realities face. And for all we know, we too could find ourselves in a similar situation one day - we could become .

    Because for some reason you are under attack, you cannot feed your family or seek medical care for the injury your daughter sustained when the last bomb fell, because you cannot possibly continue to live where you have done so for your entire life. So, naturally, you flee.

    One day, determined they could no longer live safely in their homes - because they belonged to the "wrong" ethnic group and the military torched their village, because their father was kidnapped and murdered by the police, because bombs continued to fall from the sky.

    This I am reflecting on what it means to treat others with dignity, humanity, empathy. Refugees are no different from you or I. They had careers, families and aspirations. They woke up each morning and lived normal lives - until one day they didn't.
