Internal displacement: 20 years of action


In 2017, there were 30.6 million new internal displacements associated with conflict, violence and disasters. Internal displacement uproots people within their own countries, often at a moment’s notice, depriving them of their homes, jobs and basic services. LEARN MORE

For seven years, armed conflict has consumed Syria. Some 6.1 million people were internally displaced as at the end of 2017, including 2.9 million displaced during the previous 12 months. #InvisibleCitizens

The rate of displacement continued unabated in 2017 with an average of 6,500 people displaced per day between January and September.

Between 19 June – 2 July, an estimated 270,000 people have been displaced – with some 175,000 in Quneitra governorate, at camps along the armistice line and in surrounding villages, 35,000 who have gone towards the south-west in the Tal Shihaab area, and 60,000 at the Nasib/Jaber border crossing.

Yemen: Humanitarian Fund helps displaced families survive the harsh winter

As the brutal conflict in Yemen enters its fourth year, more than 3 million people (10 per cent of the total population) have experienced the shock of displacement. Two million people remain internally displaced across the country.

Thousands of Yemeni families have been forced to flee their homes and leave everything behind. Many are in desperate need of shelter, food, water, sanitation and access to health services. They are also more likely to be exposed to protection risks, including human rights abuses and gender-based violence.

Invisible Citizens – An animation illustrating the challenges facing IDPs

In support of the GP20 anniversary Plan of Action and campaign to bring internally displaced people out of the shadows, OCHA has launched a new campaign #InvisibleCitizens, to humanize and draw global attention to internally displaced people (IDPs).

While conflicts and crises have focused world attention on refugees and migrants, internal displacement is largely under-reported and virtually invisible in public media. Of the more than 65 million people forcibly displaced globally, almost 40 million of those are displaced within their countries of origin. The majority stay displaced for years, without finding durable solutions.

If internally displaced people do not cross an international border, they do not have access to the fundamental international protection mechanisms available to refugees and migrants.
