When you give, you will help ensure refugees get the medical care they need.
Being sick is yet another hurdle for refugee families and their children. Over 90 per cent of Syrian refugee families in Lebanon are living in deepening debt. For some families, spending money on healthcare would mean cutting down on food or not being able to pay rent.
After all they have been through, refugee children are still suffering. From chronic conditions such as asthma, to emergencies like pneumonia, many refugee children are sick and are in desperate need of medical support.
How is UNHCR responding?
UNHCR is the largest supporter of hospital care for Syrian refugees. Through a network of 50 contracted hospitals, UNHCR covers up to 90% of admission costs for emergencies and life-threatening conditions. UNHCR is also providing support for 27 primary health care clinics that are easily accessible for refugees. Last year, UNHCR supported more than 73,000 hospital admissions and close to 270,000 primary health care consultations, where almost one in four patients were children under five years old.
The needs:
This year UNHCR’s health care programme is only one per cent funded, and without your lifesaving donations, we will not be able to provide this vital support to refugees in urgent need of healthcare.
We need your support in order to:
1. Tackle rising malnutrition.
2. Provide support to malnourished refugees on arrival to UNHCR protected areas.
3. Prevent and contain diseases, which can make malnutrition worse.
4. Ensure treatment for those who are malnourished.
5. Ensure that families are protected in the long term.
6. Provide support for pregnant women and new mothers.
