UNHCR humanitarian assistance reaches Deir Ez-Zor city in eastern Syria

12 trucks loaded with mattresses, blankets, solar lamps and plastic sheets reaches Deir Ez-Zor governorate in eastern Syria.

On Saturday, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent dispatched a humanitarian aid convoy consisting of 12 trucks loaded with humanitarian assistance to Deir Ez-Zor governorate in eastern Syria.

“Deir Ez-Zor has been the site of relentless fighting for more than three years, and we know that the situation there is desperate, especially that winter is upon us and people need humanitarian assistance and this what UNHCR is here to do”, said Sajjad Malik, UNHCR’s Representative for Syria.

The convoy was due to provide essential relief items and winter supplies to SARC’s branch in Deir Ez-Zor to lead the distribution process of mattresses, blankets and plastic sheets to people in need. UNHCR’s aid delivered included 10,000 mattresses and 20,000 blankets, 5,000 solar lamps and 3,000 plastic sheets.

This is the third dispatch of UNHCR’s humanitarian aid to people of Deir Ez-Zor, after the opening of the land route to the city, “The opening of the land route enabled us and our sister humanitarian agencies to extend our hands to civilians trapped in Deir Ez-Zor for years and to alleviate their suffering.” Malik added.

Country-wide, UNHCR continues delivering relief items to millions of people in need. So far in 2017 UNHCR dispatched Core Relief items in the 14 governorates of Syria. UNHCR through its partners distributed Core Relief Items to nearly 3 million people across the country.
