Almost 100,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Italy through Libya since the beginning of the year, according to UNHCR reports. Most are fleeing poverty and conflict in sub-Saharan Africa. But, in Libya they’re caught in an endless cycle of abuse, violence and exploitation. The majority reports being kidnapped, forced into labour or sold into slavery by street gangs, smugglers and militias that operate in the country.
UNHCR estimates that over 1.3 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance in Libya. UNHCR calls for unrestricted humanitarian access inside the country to ensure that international protection is given to refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable people.
