Refugee youth join Indonesians in planting seeds for a better future through organic farming
Abdi (not his real name), a young refugee from Ethiopia, walked into neat rows of vegetables managed by UNHCR’s partner The Learning Farm (TLF) on one sunny morning in Cianjur regency, West Java. He proudly showed various vegetables that he grew in the vegetable garden. “This is kangkung [morning glory]. These are tomatoes, lettuces,” said Abdi.

Although Indonesia has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention on Refugees, the country has a long tradition of hosting refugees and people in need of international protection.
Today, there are some 13,800 refugees registered with the UNHCR office in Indonesia.
25% of the total number of people registered in UNHCR are children
404 children came alone or separated from their families
At the end of December 2017, most refugees in Indonesia came from Afghanistan (55%), Somalia (11%) and Iraq (6%)
