Libya: Deaf Eritrean artist evacuated to safety
Amanuel is an Eritrean refugee and artist, and has been on a difficult and dangerous journey. The 25-year-old has been deaf and mute since birth, but he expresses much through his drawings, including compassion and hope for the future. UNHCR on Wednesday evacuated Amanuel from detention in Libya, and toward safety in Italy, part of a three-month operation that has led to the evacuation of more than 1,000 extremely vulnerable individuals to third countries.
