    8. With the expiry of the relocation scheme in September 2017, there is now little scope for happy endings like this. Under the current , the family would have waited much longer before being united. Ivan instead may have been left behind.

    7. Fortunately for the family, in 2015 EU leaders agreed an emergency 2-year scheme to distribute refugees from 🇬🇷 and 🇮🇹 to other EU countries. Through this process, the family were eventually reunited in Germany in March 2017, ending a long separation.

    6. In addition, Ivan, who is Alan and Gyan’s brother and one of their carers, was outside the scope of the Dublin rules. Leaving Ivan in Greece was unthinkable for their mother. As Amsha told us: “Ivan is my right arm. How could I go and leave him behind?”

    3. Two of the siblings, Alan and Gyan, have muscular dystrophy & use wheelchairs. They crossed the mountains from Iraq into Turkey strapped to either side of a horse. Their mother, brother Ivan and younger sister Shilan pushed their wheelchairs behind.

    2. When the so-called Islamic State (IS) group captured their town in summer 2014 the family fled, but not all together. The father and one of his daughters made their way to Germany. For the rest of the family, the journey wasn’t so easy…

    We are at Istanbul’s Çağlayan courthouse to demand the release of Amnesty’s Taner Kılıç and the aqcuittal of all 11 human rights defenders in this baseless trial. Hearing postponed until 2pm today. We’ve waited for over a year for justice, we can wait a few hours more.
