Over 1.7 million children and adolescents are out of school. 1 in 3 schools is either damaged, destroyed or occupied. Four out of five Syrians live in poverty.
1.2 million houses have been partially damaged, out of which 400,000 have been totally destroyed causing millions of people to flee to collective shelters, schools, public spaces, tower buildings, unfinished buildings, hospitals, basements, mosques and churches or to host families mostly from the local communities and other areas.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is leading the Shelter Sector and NFI Sector of the Humanitarian Response in Syria. And in cooperation with the sectors’ members including UN Agencies and International and National NGOs, the Shelter Sector reached 72,288 people with shelter solutions in 2015, and the NFI Sector delivered 8,024,643 basic household items to 3,052,079 people across Syria since January to October 2016. Annual Needs Assessments Report
In close coordination with sector partners, the Shelter and NFI Sectors carried out this needs assessment between July and August 2016 inside Syria. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) took the lead in developing the data collection instruments while sector members took the lead in the social preparation and in the actual data gathering. The metadata and findings of this needs assessment are stated in the following sections.
