Syria – Making a Difference
Behind the huge numbers are real families, like Hussein, Fatima and their eight children.
In Syria, 6.6 million people are internally displaced and 13.1 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 5.6 million of them are in acute need.
So far in 2018, UNHCR distributed over 1.2 million core relief items reaching 808,000 people inside Syria.
But what do these numbers mean for Hussein and Fatima?
Hostilities forced them to flee their home, not only once, but twice. They returned to a village in Rural Aleppo with no infrastructure.

Hussein and Fatima were excited to receive UNHCR’s relief items to support them in their day-to-day life.

Hussein found the solar light to be a necessity. Their village lacks any source of electricity.
“Now we can see at night,” said Hussein. UNHCR staff offered to help Hussein to assemble the solar light, but he was eager to do it himself and learn how it works.

UNHCR’s core relief kit includes a kitchen set, solar lamp, IKEA mattresses, blankets, plastic sheets and jerry can.

UNHCR is on the ground reaching out to families like Fatima and Hussein to assess their needs and ensure an efficient response.

But this big number – $3.51 billion – is what saves lives.
Donor support has been generous but needs to continue as the Syria crisis goes into its 8th year.
