UNHCR’s Zahle Office covers the entire Bekaa area, comprising two governorates (central/west Bekaa and north Bekaa) and spanning an area of more than 4,400 square km – nearly 40 per cent of the total size of Lebanon.
The Bekaa’s governorates contain five districts, 166 municipalities and 14 unions of municipalities. The Lebanese population in the Bekaa is estimated at 540,000 residents.
As of 30 June 2017, the total number of registered Syrian refugees in the Bekaa stands at 357,303 individuals. UNHCR’s office in Zahle works with over 50 operational partners, has agreements with 16 partners that implement projects, and a network of 236 refugee volunteers who work daily to assist the Bekaa’s 78,407 refugee families.
