Why a regional civil society network on displacement?

The Middle East and North Africa region has seen a dramatic increase in displacement in recent years, coupled with striking changes in social, economic, security and political dynamics. Home to 5 per cent of the world’s population, the region hosts a staggering 47 per cent of the world’s 65 million refugees and IDPs.

Civil society has stepped up to advocate for persons of concern and provide them with essential services. Its role in responding to the region’s refugee and displacement crisis has been flagged by world leaders as an area of particular importance.

Embracing the “whole of society” approach championed in the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, over 150 representatives from civil society across the region have taken part in consultations aimed at forming a network, the first of its kind in the region. They envision it as a forum for regional dialogue, unique both in its geographical scope and in the diversity of its members.

What is the MENA Civil Society Network for Displacement?

The MENA Civil Society Network for Displacement aims to strengthen the role of civil society in responding to the displacement crisis. In particular, it aims to serve as a platform for civil society stakeholders in the region to strengthen and amplify their voices and actions, helping to protect displaced people and support host communities. Its members include representatives from national NGOs, foundations, media, academia and the private sector.
