REACH

REACH is a joint initiative of two international non-governmental organizations - ACTED and IMPACTS Initiatives - and the UN Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT). REACH’s mission is to strengthen evidence-based decision making by aid actors through efficient data collection, management and analysis before, during and after an emergency. By doing so, REACH contributes to ensuring that communities affected by emergencies receive the support they need. All REACH activities are conducted in support to and within the framework of inter-agency aid coordination mechanisms.

REACH was deployed to Somalia in July 2012 to provide surge capacity and technical support to the Shelter Cluster. REACH’s inputs contributed to the formulation of countrywide needs analysis and response strategies. Since then, REACH continues to carry out assessments, camp profiles, and mapping activities in many regions of Somalia with the aim of providing quality and reliable data and information to Shelter Cluster and its partners.

As part of its core mandate in Somalia, REACH supports the Shelter Cluster through:

•    Development and pilot of the Shelter Cluster’s monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework and tools;

•    Conducting multi-cluster baseline assessment in priority IDP settlements in Somalia;

•    Supporting the roll-out of the Somalia Initial Rapid Needs Assessment (SIRNA) process; and

•    Representing as a permanent member of the strategic advisory group (SAG) through its role as the cluster’s assessment surge capacity support.
