The Journey of the Makonde to Citizenship 14 Mins English

The Makonde arrived in Kenya in the 1940s as laborers but, after independence the Makonde were rendered stateless as they were not recognized as Kenyan citizens. They began their agitation for recognition in 1984, intensified it from 2006. In August 2016 the deadline for registration of stateless persons and they resolved to trek to Nairobi to seek audience with the president. On 10th October 2016 with the help of Kenya Human Rights Commission - KHRC and other CSOs , they trekked for over 500 kilometers on 4 days and they finally were recognized through a Presidential Directive on 13th October 2016 as the 43rd tribe in Kenya. In February 2017 they were issued with certificates of Kenyan Citizenship becoming the #43rdTribe in Kenya. The journey of registration that started with a trek to statelessness from Kwale County to Sate House, Nairobi has finally bore fruit with the community voting for the first time in the 2017 general elections.
