Problem Statement
Since 2014, over 3.5 million people have been affected by the conflict in Ukraine. The consequences of the ongoing conflict, and in particular widespread internal displacement, have placed strains on the Ukrainian Government and on host communities. Tensions have developed between IDPs and some host communities, particularly where resources are scarce and there is competition or perceived competition for places in schools, access to government services, accommodation, and employment.
Objective
The overall aim of the GP20 initiative in Ukraine is to highlight the ongoing role of internal displacement in Ukraine, and the need for protection and solutions for internal displacement to be part of peace building and peace processes in Ukraine and across the globe.
Activities
A Global Protection Cluster Thematic Roundtable on Internal Displacement in Peacebuilding and Peace Processes will take place in Kiev, Ukraine on May 23, 2018. The roundtable will bring together actors with roles and responsibilities as well as practical field experience in peace processes, including national governments, local civil society, National Human Rights Institutions, UN agencies, international peace process mediators and international NGOs. The output from this roundtable will be a compilation of good practices presented by field experts and discussed at this event. This compilation will be disseminated to national and international practitioners working with IDPs, mediation experts, crisis responders and peacebuilding officers and conflict prevention specialists.
A photo exhibition on internally displaced persons in Ukraine, jointly organized by UNHCR and the Council of Europe, took place at the Council of Europe’s Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg in February, 2018. The photos will also be exhibited at the “Panel discussion on the human rights of internally displaced persons in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Guiding Principles”, which will take place during the Human Rights Council session in Geneva in June.
