GPC Somalia Country Briefing

The Global Protection Cluster (GPC) held a Somalia Country Briefing on 20th November at UNHCR Headquarters.

The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Somalia, Mr Peter de Clercq, and the UNHCR Representative in Somalia, Ms Caroline Van Buren, reflected on the development of a comprehensive and system-wide Humanitarian Country Team Protection Strategy for the country.

The strategy, which is currently being finalised, addresses the most urgent protection risks affecting Somalia’s population and the overall humanitarian response. It provides a necessary framework that identifies protection priorities to inform humanitarian decision-making and response, reaffirming that protection is the collective responsibility of the entire Humanitarian Country Team (HCT). It also takes into account the complementarities with other actors, such as the UN Country Team and the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) in achieving protection outcomes.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mr Vincent Lelei and representatives from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Somalia NGO Consortium.
