While many refugees and asylum-seekers are leaving Latvia to go to other EU countries, Hamid who is from Afghanistan calls Latvia his home and has applied for Latvian citizenship.

Protecting through education

In Africa’s largest and most complex emergency, the South Sudan crisis, almost 90 per cent of those fleeing are women and children. Funding to UNHCR’s South Sudan operation from the Norwegian Government ensures that young South Sudanese refugee women and girls can attend and stay enrolled in school.

Roskilde Municipality has successfully teamed up with a Danish company to employ refugees. They receive language classes at the job, and the municipality has posted employees to assist with minor ongoing challenges.

UNHCR calls for the EU relocation scheme to continue

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has urged EU Member States to promptly relocate all asylum-seekers eligible under the EU’s emergency relocation scheme and for it to continue beyond the two years originally planned.
