A note on the refugee population from Burundi
The above total reflects the refugee population covered by the Burundi Regional Refugee Response Plan and includes Burundian refugees who fled since April 2015, as well as some 37,000 Burundian refugees who had sought asylum in the region prior to April 2015. In addition to the population above, there are some 12,500 Burundian refugees in Kenya, 4,800 in Mozambique, 3,600 in Malawi and 2,500 in Zambia who are assisted within the respective country-level programmes. A further 23,000 Burundian refugees, who have lived for decades in Tanzania, no longer receive assistance.

  Highlights
In September, close to 3,000 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers were newly recorded in the region. The largest number was recorded in Uganda with 1,154 newly registered Burundian refugees.

Voluntary Repatriation of Burundian Refugees from Tanzania started on 7 September 2017. As of 30 September 2017, a total of 2,343 Burundian refugees, including 240 persons with specific needs (PSNs), were facilitated to return to Burundi.

Following the death of 38 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers in Kamanyola, South Kivu, in a confrontation with armed forces, UNHCR is providing emergency aid and called for investigation.

As of 31 August 2017, the number of new arrivals was 4,887 since January 2017. The arrival rate over the year is an average of 20 individuals per day so far. Of the 4,887 new arrivals, 52% have settled in Reception Centers and the rest of 48% have settled in urban areas ( Kigali, Huye).

In the new site of Mulongwe works are ongoing with two operational partners (MEDEOR and CARITAS) working with their own funds. However, works have slowed down due to the worsening security situation in Fizi territory.

Cholera epidemics was declared in the territories of Fizi and Uvira. No cases have been reported so far in refugees hosting structures. Preventive measures were put in place.
