Carolina’s and Saluka’s Story, Brazil

Saluka, Carolina and her two sons.

Saluka, Carolina and their two sons.

This is the second country of refuge for Saluka. Born in Sri Lanka, he fled his country from violent conflict when he was still an adolescent. In Syria, he found a new home, graduated, and married Carolina. They had two sons, and were planning their future, never thinking that they would have to leave their home.

As the civil war worsened, the couple decided it was no longer safe to stay and left for Brazil, counting on the support of a relative of Carolina. “Today we feel good here. Brazil will be our new home,”  Saluka says. Even though Carolina misses her parents, sisters and nephews, who are still in Damascus, Syria, she remains optimist about the future.
