UN Agencies Concerned About Limited Funding To Assist South Sudanese Refugees In Sudan

KHARTOUM – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today expressed deep concern at funding shortfalls which could affect the assistance that is being provided to South Sudanese refugees in Sudan.
“Our resources are being stretched at a time when needs are quickly growing,” said UNHCR’s Representative in Sudan, Mohammed Adar. “Over 50,000 South Sudanese have crossed into Sudan since the beginning of 2016, surpassing the planning figure set for the entire year. Further shortfalls in funding will hamper our ability to continue providing assistance for the existing South Sudanese refugees in Sudan while also responding to the emergency needs of new arrivals.” UNHCR humanitarian requirements for 2016 remain 18% funded, leaving over US$128 million in unmet needs.... |

UNHCR welcomes the registration of South Sudanese citizens in Khartoum

Khartoum, Sudan, 4 February 2015 (UNHCR): The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Sudan welcomes the commencement of the registration and documentation exercise of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan on 1 February 2015. This follows on the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between UNHCR, the Commission for Refugees (COR) and the Directorate General of Passports and Immigration (DPI) of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of the Sudan, on 21 December 2014, on the registration and documentation of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan.
The registration exercise will cover first Khartoum State before being rolled out to the rest of the country. Registration centres have been established in 12 of the so-called open areas, where South Sudanese will be issued with identity cards free of charge, valid for the entire period of their stay in Sudan.
