An internally displaced person (IDP) is someone who has been forced to flee his or her home due to conflict or disaster, but who remains within the borders of his or her country.
In Indonesia, as elsewhere, UNHCR only provides protection and assistance to IDPs at the Government’s request, as was the case with the 2004 tsunami in Aceh and Nias Island. During that major crisis, UNHCR was requested by the Government of Indonesia to help assisting more than 200,000 Indonesian IDPs.
Currently there are no IDPs being assisted by UNHCR in Indonesia.
