Plan Overview

Working environment

Zimbabwe continues to maintain a favorable protection environment. The overall situation remains peaceful, though there are some heightened intra-party tensions due to the elections scheduled for 2018. The number of new asylum-seekers, particularly from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is expected to increase during 2018. Progress on the prevention of statelessness is gradually improving. Despite facing economic challenges, the Government continues to support refugees and asylum-seekers through the provision of land, transit centre facilities, warehouses, access to services and social amenities, personnel and documentation. Coordination mechanisms with partners are in place and will be continued in 2018.
 

Key priorities: 

In 2018 UNHCR will focus on:
  • Engaging the most vulnerable in livelihoods activities;
  • Diversifying partnerships to increase the identification of people in need of international protection through regular border monitoring and visits to detention facilities;
  • Working with the legislature to align relevant laws with the 2013 constitution and conducting a study on statelessness.
 Despite the increase in population of concern, the budget continues to reduce. This has resulted in a considerable funding gap in shelter, education, WASH, livelihoods and core relief items support. Failure to meet these needs will have a negative impact on protection, assistance and solutions.
