日本企業からの衣料品、 ネパールにいる難民に笑顔をもたらす

ユニクロからの衣服を心待ちにして列を作るベルダンギⅠキャンプの難民

ネパール発（23日）：

日本のカジュアル衣料品大手の株式会社ユニクロは、約5万枚の衣料品を寄贈し、ネパールに避難する難民数千人にぬくもりと安らぎをもたらした。

UNHCRネパール事務所代表のアブラハム・アブラハム氏は、「今回の寄贈は難民、特に最も弱い立場にある女性と子どもの生活にとって非常に重要である」と述べ、ユニクロと日本の人々に対して謝意を表した。

ベルダンギⅠキャンプは、ネパール東部に7つある難民キャンプの1つであり、隣国のブータンから逃れてきた10万6000人が暮らしている。23日、数百人の難民が寄贈された衣服を受け取るために列を作った。難民に衣料品を配布するために、日本からはユニクロ社員3名が参加している。

ユニクロ執行役員兼法務部CSRチーム部長の新田幸弘氏は、「難民たちが衣服を受け取る時の喜びを見たり、衣服が人間の尊厳や笑顔に貢献できることを知り、私達にとっても励みになる」と述べた。

最も立場弱い子どもに贈られる日本の衣服

今回の寄贈は、全国に720の店舗を持つ同社の全社的な商品リサイクル活動によって実現した。日本の企業が自社の古着を大量に回収し、現地での寄贈に参加するのは今回が初めて。今回参加したユニクロの社員は、続けてタイの難民キャンプへ移動する。

難民キャンプの女性や老人、子どもたちは喜びの声をあげ、箱から取り出された衣服を受け取るために長い列を作った。

ある母親は、感謝するとともに今回の寄贈がいかに必要であり、時宜を得たものかを語った。「子どもたちの衣服を手に入れるのは非常に難しい。特に今年の冬は、衣服や毛布の支援がなければ、子供たちや老人は、夜の寒さに凍えることになっただろう。」

衣料品は難民にとって最も必要とされているニーズのひとつである。しかし、UNHCRによる衣料品配布は、資金不足により2000年から滞っている。

難民キャンプでの衣料品寄贈は、多くの人々に笑顔をもたらした。「私達は遠く離れた日本の人々の心遣いに感謝している。私達は見はなされていないことを知り嬉しく思う。」

Clothes from a Japanese Company put smiles on faces of refugees in Nepal

Tokyo, 23 February 2007

Beldangi I refugee camp, eastern Nepal, Friday 23 February (UNHCR)- The donation of clothes from a leading Japanese clothing company has brought warmth and comfort to thousands of refugees in Nepal. UNIQLO, Japan’s leading specialty clothing retail chain, donated some 50,000 pieces of clothing.

“This donation is making a huge difference in the lives of the refugees, particularly among the women and children–who are the most vulnerable,” said Abraham Abraham, UNHCR Representative in Nepal.

“We are grateful for this important contribution of UNIQLO and people of Japan,” Abraham added.

Hundreds of refugees gathered to received the clothes on Friday in Beldangi I refugee camp, one of the seven camps in eastern Nepal that house some 106,000 refugees originating from neighbouring Bhutan. A team of three members from UNIQLO flew from Japan to personally distribute the clothes to the refugees.

“It is so encouraging for us to see for ourselves how refugees are happily receiving our donation and to learn that clothing could contribute to human dignity and bring big smiles,” said Mr. Yukihiro Nitta, Vice President in charge of Finance and Legal Affairs in UNIQLO at the donation ceremony.

The donation was made possible from the company-wide efforts made by UNIQLO through their 720 outlets in Japan. This is the first time for a Japanese company to collect large quantities of used clothing and take part in the distribution. The delegation will continue to travel into Thailand.

The camp was excited to receive the clothing, many women, elders, children were all anxiously waited as they queued up to receive the clothes that were taken out of the boxes.

Refugee mother thanks and describes why the donation was necessary and timely,
“We have faced great difficulty for our children’s clothing. Especially this winter, without the assistance of proper clothing and blanket, children and elders were suffering the chilly evenings.”

Clothes were one of the unmet needs of the refugees and UNHCR has not been able to provide clothes since 2000 due to lack of funds.

The clothes distribution in the camp left many people smiling. “We are happy to learn that people far away in Japan are concerned about us and we are not alone.”
