China: 1. I have had a look at the DOS 2005 reports. Is there any more specific information on workers' protests in Fujian province 2005 to date (relating to unpaid wages or other labour matters), and how the authorities have dealt with such protests? 2. Would there be any specific information on this particular protest (National Day, 1 October 2005, Fuzhou City central square)? 3. How would police generally be expected to react to this type of protest? For example, on National Day in the central square would it be usual for them to disperse the crowd immediately or is it possible that they would arrive one hour later? 4. Once demonstrators of this sort have come to the notice of the authorities, does the Public Security Bureau keep them on a blacklist from then on?

China: 1. Is there any country or media information about worker demonstrations in Tianjin on 30 December 2004 over dismissals in the machine industry? 2. What is the official policy on "independent" unions or workers demonstrating on such issues? 3. What is the length of detention? Are there many reports of detentions in Tianjin? 4. What is the normal sentence for "threatening national security and social stability"? 5. Is it normal for a person to be sentenced to 6 months' detention without a trial?

Russian Federation: 1. Please provide an update with regard to the law which came into effect in January 2004 which relates to alternative service for new military recruits (conscripts)? 2. Are Christian conscientious objectors generally being allowed to do alternative service? 3. What are the typical alternatives available? 4. What are the views of the main human rights groups about the implementation of the new law? 5. Please provide evidence as to the possible treatment by fellow soldiers of conscripts who are Orthodox Christian, have a Jewish background or have lived abroad and have poor Russian language ability. Is it any worse than that of other conscripts?
