The Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative Programme (DAFI) is a global scholarship financed by the Government of Germany. Established in 1992, DAFI provides scholarships for young refugees to study at universities and colleges in their host country. UNHCR’s DAFI programme has pioneered a holistic approach, empowering over 9,300 young refugees globally so far, to contribute knowledge, skills and leadership to their communities.
In Pakistan, DAFI scholarships have supported more than 1,200 students since its start. The number of female candidates participating in education in Pakistan is increasing, and interest in the DAFI programme is growing. Twenty-nine-year-old Afghan refugee, Gulfam is an aspiring DAFI scholar who is pursuing a law degree in Pakistan and wants to work for the protection of women and children in her country Afghanistan.
