Contributions to UNHCR

Denmark has long ranked among UNHCR’s top ten donors, and was in 2016 UNHCR’s 5th largest donor per capita. Denmark donated a total of DKK 389.5 million (USD 60.3 million) to UNHCR in 2016 of which 80 per cent was flexible and unrestricted funding. Denmark supports UNHCR every year with an unearmarked core contribution of DKK 160 million that can be redistributed over and over again throughout the year enabling UNHCR to save lives in several ongoing acute emergencies each year. Read more about the importance of Denmark’s unearmarked funding.

In addition, Denmark is a strong supporter of the Solutions Alliance and contributes with an annual large flexible thematic contribution of DKK 110 million towards strategic solutions oriented initiatives that promote innovation, self-reliance and other durable solutions, including for protracted situations, which in 2016 targeted the Afghanistan and Mano River/West Africa situations. Furthermore, Denmark contributes with an emergency fund of DKK 50.5 million at the start of every year that UNHCR can allocate to where the need is most urgent. In 2016, Denmark contributed through its emergency fund to the Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Malawi, Nigeria and South Sudan emergencies. In 2016, Denmark also allocated funding to the Syria crisis, Iraq, Somalia situation and Tanzania. Denmark is offering in-kind UNHCR office space in the UN-City in Copenhagen and covered relocation costs.
